There's nothing that satisfies a sweet craving quite like a spongy cupcake. Not all cupcakes are created equal, however.

While Magnolia might be the most iconic cupcake shop in New York City thanks to Sex and the City there are much better options available.

Whether you're looking for something chocolate-y or a plain vanilla cupcake, the options below are sure to bring a smile to your face.

Whenever you enter this cozy shop you'll be greeted with the sweet scent of cream cheese frosting, chocolate and vanilla cupcake batter.

There are dozens of flavors to choose from including the standard red velvet. However, if you're craving some chocolate, the Brooklyn Blackout should be your go-to choice.

It toes the line of being almost too much chocolate. They also offer seasonal flavors like Banana and Pumpkin.

If you're looking for something a bit bigger, the bakery also offers full-sized cakes of each flavor.

Be forewarned though, this is a neighborhood haunt so there will be a line regardless at what time you arrive.

The best part is you can create your own cupcake. Choose your base, frosting and topping to make the ultimate cupcake.

Or, if you're feeling adventurous, try their dozens of center-filled cupcakes like Boston Cream, Peach Cobbler or Crème Brulee.

Plus, you don't have to feel too guilty about eating here as the company donates a portion of their profit to schools in the area.

If you're hankering for a Molly's Cupcake outside of New York City, you're in luck so long as you're either in Chicago or Iowa City.

If you wanted a little booze incorporate with your sweets then Prohibition Bakery is the spot to visit.

Here you'll see infusions of booze and cupcakes melded into one delicious package.

They rotate between five to eight different flavors every day so you'll have to visit several times to try them all. Since they specialize in mini cupcakes, you can try all of the flavors of the day and maybe even get a little tipsy at the same time.

Some of the flavors they offer are Old Fashioned, Mulled Wine, Dark & Stormy and White Russian. They also have some non-alcoholic cupcakes for those who do not drink like For the Love of Bacon and Nuts & Berries.

Oh and remember, since these little cupcakes do contain alcohol you will need to show your ID before purchasing them.

If you don't want to spend a fortune on cupcakes, then Sugar Sweet Sunshine is the perfect place to grab a sweet treat.

Their normal-sized cupcakes are priced at $2.25, blowing its competitors out of the water.

More importantly, they're delicious as evidenced by Zagat awarding it the #1 cupcake shop in New York City. For the adventurous folks, try the pistachio for a flavor you won't find elsewhere.

If you're not in the mood for cupcakes you can also indulge in some pudding, brownies, cookies or cheesecake.

Butter Lane

Advertising itself as 'cupcakes for grownups,' Butter Lane focuses on creating a rich cupcake that is never too sweet.

They also offer two different frostings: the American sugar-based one and an egg-based on that is similar to a merengue.

You can create your own custom cupcake or choose from the various seasonal options available like Maple Pecan on Banana or Espresso on Chocolate. While Butter Lane might not have creative names for their cupcakes, you know exactly what you're getting.

The only outlier is the Elvis – peanut butter with banana. It's hard not to try all of the available flavor combinations, so make sure to bring your appetite and some friends so you can try them all.

The cupcake itself is always light and fresh while the frosting is never overbearingly sweet.
