To call Chicago a steak town is a bit of an understatement to say the least. Did you know that there are 734 steakhouses in River North alone? That's a lot of meat, you have to agree.
And while perhaps one could argue that each of them has something unique to offer to the steak connoisseur there are some Chicago steakhouses that, for various different reasons, truly stand out as the best. Here are our personal choices for the best steakhouses in Chicago, our meat lover's top three. Do you agree?
66 West Kinzie Street
Yes, this is Bill and Giuliana Rancic's place but please, if you balk at the idea at dining at a restaurant owned by a former Apprentice winner and a TV anchor don't, because everything they, along with partners Jerrod and Molly Melman and Executive Chef Doug Psaltis have created something truly special.
The vibe at RPM Steak is old school steakhouse gone 21st century contemporary and so a meal here, even if you only opt for the uber popular Lunch Express menu, feels like an event, and that, in our humble opinion, is the way a visit to a steakhouse should feel.
Turning to the food it's hard to know where to begin. The aforementioned Express Lunch offers up a $26 prix fixe delight that allows diners to choose between a delicious lamb burger, a po boy packed with fried oysters and bacon or a red snapper that always tastes just caught fresh. Come the evening you can indulge your carnivorous tastes in a selection of succulent steaks, including the $85 5oz Waygu Miyazaki that, while pricey, is worth every penny.
Chicago Cut Steakhouse
300 N Lasalle
If you like steak, and you like celebrity watching, then this is the steakhouse for you. This is a favorite haunt of the city's baseball, hockey and basketball dudes as well as Oprah, Charles Barkley and, when he's back in town, none other than President Barack Obama.
But this 'modern take on the classic steakhouse' has more than just a celebrity following to boost its profile. All of the steaks are butchered onsite and from the "Holy Grail” Bone-In-Prime Rib to the Marinated Cajun Rib Eye to the melt in your mouth Chicago Cut Bone-In Filet they are delicious to the last bite.
The menu is comprehensive, encompassing fantastic seafood and mind boggling burgers and oddly enough for a restaurant devoted to carnivores there are several rather impressive vegetarian dishes on the menu.
Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak, and Stone Crab
60 E Grand Ave
A great steak in a great steakhouse is indeed a wonderful thing. Add perfectly cooked stone crab though and the meal is elevated to a different level.
Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak, and Stone Crab is a Miami legend, but fortunately for Chicagoans Richard Melman decided that the Windy City needed a Joe's of its own, and we are very glad he did.
Served up in the stylish - but not too stuffy - dining room you will find steaks of all kinds and while they are all very good we recommend pairing your stone crab with a classic NY Strip, it's just a special experience you should not miss.
It's also worth noting that Joe's serves some of the best fried chicken in town and no matter what entree you order a side of the addictingly good Lyonnaise Potatoes is a must.
